Aunt Dimity Books in Order

If you’re ready for a truly cozy English mystery series, I highly recommend the Aunt Dimity books in order for feel-good mysteries with a bit of sweet ghostly paranormal goodness.

I stumbled upon the Aunt Dimity series a few years back, and I’m so glad I did! It’s become one of my go-to comfort reads when I need a break from the real world.

The series kicks off with Aunt Dimity’s Death, and it’s not your typical cozy mystery. Instead of a murder, we’ve got this American woman, Lori Shepherd, who discovers that her mom’s bedtime story character, Aunt Dimity, was actually real. And get this – Dimity’s left her a fortune and a cottage in England! Talk about a dream come true, right?

If you’re looking for serious suspense or even a murder mystery, this may not be the series for you. The Aunt Dimity series is not a murder mystery series!

They’re more… gentle puzzles if that makes sense? But that’s what I dig about them. They’re perfect for when you want something cozy and not too stressful.

One thing to keep in mind is that the books don’t necessarily have to be read in strict order. However, starting with the first one gives you a better feel for the characters and their relationships. Plus, it’s fun to see how things develop over time.

So if you’re in the mood for something warm and fuzzy with a dash of mystery, give Aunt Dimity a whirl. Just don’t blame me if you end up wanting to pack your bags and move to the English countryside!

If you would like to read the Aunt Dimity books in order, then I highly recommend grabbing the printable reading list!

Paranormal Cozies: Aunt Dimity Books in Order

Lori Shepherd thought Aunt Dimity was just a character in a bedtime story…

…Until the Dickensian law firm of Willis & Willis summons her to a reading of the woman’s will. Aunt Dimity Mystery Series by Nancy Atherton

Nancy Atherton is the mastermind behind the Aunt Dimity series I’ve been raving about. She lives in Colorado, but she writes about the English countryside like she’s lived there her whole life. Talk about imagination!

Atherton’s been churning out these delightful books since 1992, and she’s still going strong. She’s published over 20 Aunt Dimity novels, and each one’s a little gem.

Her books have hit bestseller lists and won awards, but what I love most is how she’s created this cozy world that feels like home to so many readers.

Aunt Dimity Books in Order

What I love about these books is the setting. Most of the stories take place in this quaint little English village called Finch. It’s the kind of place where everybody knows everybody’s business, and there’s always a pot of tea brewing somewhere. It’s like stepping into a postcard!

The main character, Lori, is a gem. She’s curious, sometimes a bit impulsive, and always gets herself into some kind of pickle. But the real star of the show? It’s Aunt Dimity herself—a ghost who communicates through a journal. Sounds kooky, I know, but trust me, it works.

Aunt Dimity’s Death (Aunt Dimity Mystery Book 1)

Aunt Dimity’s Death kicks off this series with Lori, who inherits a fortune and an English cottage from Aunt Dimity – a character she thought was just from bedtime stories! There’s no murder, but plenty of mystery as Lori has to uncover secrets hidden in old letters.

It’s part fairy tale, part ghost story, and all charm. I love how it blends the cozy mystery feel with a touch of the paranormal. Trust me, it’s a real treat!

In the 23rd installment of the bestselling Aunt Dimity series, a dark and stormy night kicks off a ghost chase in rural England

On a dull and dreary October day, Lori Shepherd and her husband Bill set off for the historic town of Rye, on the southeast coast of England, for a quiet weekend together without the kids. Bill must first pay a visit to a reclusive client–but after Lori drops him off, a powerful storm drives her off course and leaves her stranded in an ancient, rambling inn called The King’s Ransom. When Lori is spooked by ghostly noises in the night, Aunt Dimity reminds her rather tartly that not all ghosts intend to harm the living.

But the longer Lori is stuck at the inn, the stranger things seem. She learns that the inn was once a hangout for smugglers, and that it’s riddled with secret tunnels the smugglers used to reach a network of hidden caves. Then there’s the inn’s cook–a brawny, gruff ex-con–who seems to have a beef with a mysterious French guest. Are the noises Lori hears made by the spirits of long dead smugglers? Or should she be more worried by the inn’s living inhabitants? Joining forces with her new friend Bishop Wyndham, and guided by Aunt Dimity’s wise counsel, Lori sets out to discover once and for all who–or what–is haunting The King’s Ransom.

Aunt Dimity and the Heart of Gold (Aunt Dimity Mystery Book 24)

A holiday party that turns into a sleepover due to bad weather. The excitement really kicks in when a quirky woman named Tilly shows up and discovers hidden treasure in the host’s house!

It’s a cozy mystery with friendship, secrets, and a dash of holiday cheer. Such a fun read, and I like re-reading this one around the Christmas holiday season.

In the newest installment of the bestselling Aunt Dimity series, a dreary Christmas leads to hidden treasure and new friendships

It’s almost Christmas in the small English village of Finch–and everyone is sick. Though many of the villagers regretfully decline their invitations to Emma Harris’s annual Christmas bash, Lori Shepherd has no intention of missing it. When the winter weather takes a turn for the worse, it’s agreed that none of the guests will leave until morning. There’s general merriment as the Christmas party becomes a pajama party–until a car appears in the winding driveway and promptly slides off the slick pavement and into a ditch.

Matilda “Tilly” Trout–a lost and scatterbrained, middle-aged woman–is mercifully unhurt and invited to stay the night. While she catches her breath, Emma asks her other guests if they would like a tour of the Manor–including an odd room that puzzles her. Several guests put forth guesses as to its purpose, but it’s Tilly who correctly identifies the room as a chapel. Placing a palm on one of the ornately-carved panels, Tilly finds a hidden compartment concealing a pile of glittering treasure–including an exquisitely decorated heart made of solid gold. Where did it come from, and why does it look so different from everything else in the chapel? Why didn’t Emma even know about this hidden compartment in her own home until now–and how did Tilly?

With Aunt Dimity’s otherworldly help and Tilly’s bewildering store of knowledge, Lori and friends set out to unravel the mystery behind the heart of gold. And, against all odds–and Christmas finally comes to Finch!

Aunt Dimity and the Enchanted Cottage (Aunt Dimity Mystery Book 25)

A mysterious newcomer arrives in Finch and keeps to himself, but our curious protagonist, Lori, won’t give up on befriending him. They end up uncovering some hidden local history, including a secret from the past.

It’s a lovely story about community, healing, and how, sometimes, the most unexpected people can bring a town together.

In the twenty-fifth installment of the bestselling Aunt Dimity series, when an inscrutable newcomer arrives in Finch, Lori is determined to befriend him–and in the process discovers Finch’s own heart-wrenching past

It’s early May in the small English village of Finch and the air is crackling with excitement: a newcomer is about to move into Pussywillows, a riverside cottage with a romantic reputation. Will the cottage’s newest resident prove yet again its enchanting ability to matchmake? But when Crispin Windle arrives, no one knows what to make of him: seemingly a loner, he repels every welcoming gesture and appears altogether uninterested in being a part of the community. Soon, the townspeople have all but dismissed him.

Only Lori and Tommy Prescott, a young army veteran who recently moved to Finch, refuse to give up. They orchestrate a chance meeting that leads to a startling discovery: the remains of a Victorian woolen mill that once brought prosperity to Finch. But it also contains a dark secret about Finch’s past. Will Mr. Windle make himself an outcast for good by digging up Finch’s history? Or will he offer the town a chance to heal—and finally allow the town to help him heal, too?
